PHOTOGRAPHY and VIDEOGRAPHY

Jack Fritscher brought a photographer’s eye to gay culture decades before it had a mainstream audience. Beginning in the late 1960s in San Francisco, he documented the leather, masculine, and countercultural communities of the Castro and South of Market through portraiture, editorial photography, and his work as editor-in-chief of Drummer Magazine. His photography appeared on magazine and book covers, in centerfolds and photo spreads, in fine art books, and in international exhibitions. His video work through Palm Drive Video extended that documentary impulse into a new medium. This section of the archive preserves and contextualizes that visual record.
