Camille O’Grady – Artist & Singer

Camille O’Grady (1949–2020), American musician, visual artist, and poet, studied fine art at Pratt Institute, where she met Robert Mapplethorpe, before founding the band Leather Secrets in 1974 and performing in New York’s CBGB punk scene. One of the few women admitted into New York’s all-male Mineshaft club, she moved to San Francisco in 1979 as Robert Opel’s partner at his Fey-Way Gallery, where Jack Fritscher interviewed the pair three weeks before Opel’s murder. Fritscher wrote about O’Grady across Gay San Francisco: Eyewitness Drummer, Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera, and Profiles in Gay Courage, and she appears in the documentary Uncle Bob.
