The Drummer 20 photo spread gathers the photographs that ran in issue 20 of Drummer magazine, dated January 1978. Jack Fritscher was editor-in-chief of that issue, published by John H. Embry of Alternate Publishing, with Al Shapiro as art director.
This Drummer 20 photo spread lists three sets of pictures. On page 10 is a photograph of a jockstrap chest with a copy of Sports Illustrated, shot by Jack Fritscher and credited in the magazine to “David Hurles.” On page 39 is a single photograph titled “Soldier,” of David Wycoff, made by Fritscher and Sparrow. On pages 74 to 77 are seventeen photographs from the feature “CMC Carnival 1977.”
The page 10 photograph appeared in an issue whose cover lead was the feature Gay Jock Sports, which also ran on pages 8 to 17 and continued later in the magazine. The same issue carried Fritscher’s review editorial Crimes Against Nature on page 6, the feature Gifting, and Pissing in the Wind: The Mineshaft. It also included the poem “Dune Body” on page 16, an “Astrologic” satire on page 30, a review of Pasolini’s Salo, and a New Year’s Eve party report titled “Night Flight.”
The images below show the pages as they appeared in print. For every cover, masthead and table of contents across the magazine’s run from 1975 to 1999, see the Drummer Magazine Archive, where this issue is catalogued with its publisher, editor and art director.
