In November 1994, Jack Fritscher joined novelist Felice Picano, Firebrand Books founder Nancy Bereano, author Mabel Maney, and Gary Stern for a San Francisco Bay Area Book Festival panel titled “The Queer Ways of Publishing: How We Get Our Books ‘OUT.'” The panel brought together writers and publishers working across gay and lesbian small-press and mainstream markets to discuss the practical realities of getting queer literature into print — timely terrain for Fritscher, who was then both a widely published author and, as former editor-in-chief of Drummer magazine, deeply familiar with the business side of gay publishing.
