The Arena of Masculinity: Sports, Homosexuality, and the Meaning of Sex is a book by Brian Pronger, published by GMP Publishers in 1990. It grew out of Jack Fritscher’s cover feature “Gay Jock Sports” in Drummer #20, January 1978, which Pronger developed around Fritscher’s theme of homomasculinity. The book also reproduces one photograph by Jack Fritscher, “Gut Punchers.”

Conceptually leveraged and inspired by Jack Fritscher’s cover and cover feature, “Gay Jock Sports,” which filled 10 pages in Drummer #20, January 1978: “Gay Sports: Why Should Straight Guys Have All the Fun? The Gay Sports Revival-Fun, Fucking, and Politics.” Developing Fritscher’s theme of homomasculinity, Brian Pronger’s images include Gay Games Physique Champion, Dan Dufort, in Gut Punchers Duo, a Jack Fritscher video for Palm Drive Video. Pronger’s cover art references Patricia Nell Warren’s The Front Runner.
