Wakefield Poole – Filmmaker

Wakefield Poole (Walter Wakefield Poole III), filmmaker, directed Boys in the Sand (1971), among the first gay films to draw serious attention from mainstream critics, followed by Bijou (1972), The Bible (1973), Moving (1974), and Take One (1977). Before turning to film, Poole choreographed for Broadway and network television, including two years staging NBC’s Orange Bowl Parade with Anita Bryant. Jack Fritscher interviewed Poole at his Haight-Ashbury studio on August 24, 1978, for the Drummer 27 (February 1979) feature “Dirty Poole,” a title Poole later used for his own 2001 memoir, Dirty Poole: Autobiography of a Gay Porn Pioneer.
