Etienne – Artist

Etienne (Domingo “Dom” Orejudos, 1933–1991), Chicago artist and classical ballet dancer, co-founded Kris Studio and the Gold Coast bar in 1958 with his partner, photographer Chuck Renslow, helping establish one of the first gay leather bars in the United States. His pointillist and comic-strip erotic drawings, published from Tomorrow’s Man in 1953 through Drummer, including the centerfold “The Etienne Portfolio” (1976) and the strip Star Trick, made him a founding figure of what Jack Fritscher called the “Leather Mural Movement” of gay bars turned art galleries. Fritscher profiled Orejudos in the essay “Star Trick: Artist Dom Orejudos Is Etienne!” in Drummer 19 (December 1977), collected in Gay San Francisco: Eyewitness Drummer.
