Edward Lucie-Smith – Art Critic & Photographer

Edward Lucie-Smith (1933–2026), Jamaican-born British art critic, poet, and curator, wrote or edited more than one hundred books on art and photography, including Eroticism in Western Art and Movements in Art Since 1945. A friend of Jack Fritscher’s, Lucie-Smith offered a critical, London-based perspective on Robert Mapplethorpe in “Mapplethorpe as Cultural Terrorist,” a chapter in Fritscher’s memoir Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera. Lucie-Smith died July 11, 2026, at age ninety-three.
