Castro Street Fair: Iconic Event
The Castro Street Fair began in 1974 as a small neighborhood gathering organized by merchants and residents of San Francisco’s emerging gay Castro district, quickly growing into one of the city’s signature annual street celebrations. Jack Fritscher documented the Fair’s evolution over the following decades, from his eyewitness account “Castro Street Blues 1978” to his and Mark Hemry’s Palm Drive Video documentary Circus of Sex, capturing both the Fair’s community roots and its transformation into a major cultural event.
