Arthur Tress (b. 1940), photographer, studied at Bard College before beginning his career documenting Appalachia and New York’s urban decay in the late 1960s, then developing his signature “magic realism,” staging surreal scenes drawn from dreams, myth, and homosexual desire; his 2023 retrospective, Arthur Tress: Rambles, Dreams, and Shadows, appeared at the Getty. Jack Fritscher’s essay “Meditations on Photographer Arthur Tress,” a stream-of-consciousness response to Tress’s work, was published in Drummer 30 (June 1979); Fritscher also wrote “Arthur Tress: Tressian Homosurrealism,” collected in Inventing the Gay Gaze.
