Matt Smith defends playing Robert Mapplethorpe Attitude.co.UK (pdf)

Mapplethorpe, Ondi Timoner’s biographical drama starring Matt Smith as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, premiered at Tribeca in 2018 and opened theatrically through Samuel Goldwyn Films on March 1, 2019, with an expanded Director’s Cut released in 2021. Jack Fritscher does not appear in the film as himself, but actor Anthony Michael Lopez plays Fritscher in a dramatization of the two men’s first meeting — the moment in 1977 when Mapplethorpe walked into the Drummer magazine office and showed Fritscher his portfolio. That same meeting is recounted firsthand in the Bookcase interview elsewhere on this site and given extended treatment in Fritscher’s memoir, Mapplethorpe: Assault with a Deadly Camera. Fritscher also worked with producers Eliza Dushku and Nathaniel Dushku during the film’s early script development.
