Bay Area Reporter interviews of Jack Fritscher span more than three decades of conversation in San Francisco’s LGBTQ newspaper. This page gathers two of them, each with a link to the full text and a PDF of the original, so readers can follow how Fritscher’s work as a writer, editor, photographer and video director was covered from 1989 to 2025.

Bay Area Reporter Interviews of Jack Fritscher: 1989 and 2025

In 1989, John Karr profiled Fritscher as a leader of the “cottage industry” of gay video. Fritscher explained that Palm Drive Video did not shoot slick studio models. Instead, the camera went to jobsites, rodeos and biker beer busts to film real guys. He also talked about appearing on the television show People Are Talking and about video art as a way for gay men to reinvent sex after the arrival of AIDS.

In 2025, Cornelius Washington interviewed Fritscher about his book Inventing the Gay Gaze, which he wrote out of nostalgia for four San Francisco friends and the leather art they made. The conversation credits Tom of Finland with promoting homomasculinity as an identity ideal, recalls how Drummer magazine took off after issue 21 in March 1979 and reached a press run of 42,000 copies a month, and ends with how Fritscher hopes to be remembered: as a pioneer eyewitness who documented gay life before Stonewall, during the 1970s and after AIDS.
