REX – Artist

Rex (1944–2024), pseudonymous American pointillist artist, became the official artist of New York’s Mineshaft club in 1976, two years before his friend Robert Mapplethorpe became its photographer, and published his hand-inked drawings in book form as Männespielen (1976), Icons, and Rexwerk (1986). A longtime contributor to Drummer beginning with his first cover in 1976, Rex was profiled by Jack Fritscher across decades, notably in Man2Man Quarterly (1981) and in the memoir essay “Rex Requiem: Corrupt Beyond Innocence,” collected in Inventing the Gay Gaze (2022). The Tom of Finland Foundation inducted Rex into its Artists Hall of Fame in 2016.
