Tracy Baim and Owen Keehnen’s Leatherman: The Legend of Chuck Renslow (Prairie Avenue Publications, 2011) chronicles the life of Chicago leather pioneer Chuck Renslow — founder of the Gold Coast bar, International Mr. Leather, and the Leather Archives & Museum. Jack Fritscher, who came out at Renslow’s Gold Coast and later married Renslow’s bartender David Sparrow, wrote of his own history with Renslow in a Bay Area Reporter essay on the book.
Leatherman: The Legend of Chuck Renslow follows the career of Chuck Renslow, the Chicago leather pioneer who founded the Gold Coast bar, International Mr. Leather, and the Leather Archives & Museum. Jack Fritscher’s review, “Who’s Your Big Daddy?,” ran in the Bay Area Reporter, Vol. 41, No. 23, June 9–15, 2011. In it Fritscher recalls coming out at Renslow’s Gold Coast and later marrying Renslow’s bartender, David Sparrow.
